On November 8, 2006, the planet Mercury crossed the face of the sun as viewed from Earth in an event known as the Transit of Mercury. The next Transit of Mercury will occur on May 9, 2016. A much rarer Transit of Venus will occur on June 5, 2012.

Mercury is the dark smudge in the lower right. The dark area on the left is AR 10921.
